Never Diminish The Word Given To You, A Look At Two Prophets And What We Can Learn
Jer 26:2 Thus saith the LORD; Stand in the court of the LORD'S house, and speak unto all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in the LORD'S house, all the words that I command thee to speak unto them; diminish not a word:
diminish not a word — Not suppressing or softening aught for fear of giving offense; nor setting forth coldly and indirectly what can only by forcible statement do good.

Part of Speech: verb
A primitive root; to scrape off; by implication to shave, remove, lessen or withhold: - abate, clip, (di-) minish, do (take) away, keep back, restrain, make small, withdraw.
Deu 4:2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
Deu 12:32 What thing so ever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.
The True Christian is unpopular; they are not REV Wonderful, embraced by those around them. When you speak truth, the whole counsel of the lord and do not diminish the word, it will cost a price. In addition, we are never to add or take away from what the lord clearly says. Revelations speaks of the danger of doing this, believe me, all over the net I am reading people who are guilty of this word in Revelations.
Rev 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
Rev 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
In today’s pulpits and on the net, we hear word after word that makes light the word of the lord, they scrape off a layer of truth here and there, the truth is kept back, it is withheld, and so the lord withdraws his presence and blessing. This is not a popularity contest; it is not anything but the word and all to the glory of our lord.
It is a choice all must make, sometimes a word is one of comfort, do not withhold.
Sometimes it is a word of hope and love, do not withhold.
Sometimes it is a word of judgment and correction, reproof, do not withhold.
It is all Mercy and Truth. Note in our armor we are given, the belt of truth, the armor was held in place, so in a way your pants of protection did not fall off and your breast plate of righteousness did not drop, the truth holds everything together. We must speak truth in love, but truth we must speak. Most will not listen, many will want you to be put to death, or have something bad happen to you.
We are not to give one second to anyone who preaches a false Gospel, or if we invite them in and listen we are in trouble.
2Jn 1:9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
2Jn 1:10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
2Jn 1:11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.
We lit. Become a partaker in their evil deeds and doctrines when we allow them in, in our house, mind, ears, or heart.
In this chapter, that is what happened as we read more of the chapter.
Jer 26:5 To hearken to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I sent unto you, both rising up early, and sending them, but ye have not hearkened;
Jer 26:6 Then will I make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth.
Jer 26:7 So the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD.
Jer 26:8 Now it came to pass, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak unto all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people took him, saying, Thou shalt surely die.
Jer 26:11 Then spake the priests and the prophets unto the princes and to all the people, saying, This man is worthy to die; for he hath prophesied against this city, as ye have heard with your ears.
Jer 26:12 Then spake Jeremiah unto all the princes and to all the people, saying, The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that ye have heard.
What was Jer. Crime that the people wanted him dead? he spoke against the city, the nation, how dare this man speak against us, this speaking of our coming judgment alone is worthy of death, does he not know who we are, the chosen, the elite, the greatest of all, and he dare speak such words to us, off with his head.
It was the same with Jesus, the Apostles, and many along the way in history, they dared to speak repentance and judgments and off with their heads, and so it was and so it will be again, so be it. Settle the matter in your heart right now and understand the cost before your build, as Jesus said, ‘count the cost’. You cannot do it on, or in your own power, but in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Everyone has a different calling, all have different gifts, we need each other, some, like me, have the call to preach and teach truth, judgment, at times I say, “why me lord, can you just give me a softer word, more on love and blessing”?
The lord calls each to do what they must and leave the results to the lord. I did not ask for my calling, nor did I seek It, I just said hear am I lord send me, and so he did, but I never knew where he was sending me, to speak truth and repentance and judgment, not what I thought in the early days , but it is what it is. Your call is what it is, and we must stay the course.
There was another prophet speaking the same word as Jer. did you know that, most do not. Two witnesses confirm a thing.
Jer 26:20 And there was also a man that prophesied in the name of the LORD, Urijah the son of Shemaiah of Kirjathjearim, who prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah:
Jer 26:21 And when Jehoiakim the king, with all his mighty men, and all the princes, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death: but when Urijah heard it, he was afraid, and fled, and went into Egypt;
Jer 26:22 And Jehoiakim the king sent men into Egypt, namely, Elnathan the son of Achbor, and certain men with him into Egypt.
Jer 26:23 And they fetched forth Urijah out of Egypt, and brought him unto Jehoiakim the king; who slew him with the sword, and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people.
Urijah's prophecy; It was against this city, and this land, according to all the words of Jeremiah. The prophets of the Lord agreed in their testimony, and one would have thought that out of the mouth of so many witnesses the word would be regarded.
The prosecution of him for it, Jer_26:21. Jehoiakim and his courtiers were exasperated against him, and sought to put him to death; in this wicked design the king himself was principally concerned.
His absconding thereupon: When he heard that the king had become his enemy, and sought his life, he was afraid, and fled, and went in to Egypt. This was certainly his fault, and an effect of the weakness of his faith, and it sped accordingly. He distrusted God, and his power to protect him and bear him out; he was too much under the power of that fear of man which brings a snare. It looked as if he durst not stand to what he had said or was ashamed of his Master.
It was especially unbecoming him to flee into Egypt, and so in effect to abandon the land of Israel and to throw himself quite out of the way of being useful.
Note, There are many that have much grace, but they have little courage, that are very honest, but withal very timorous.
His execution notwithstanding; Jehoiakim's malice, one would think, might have contented itself with his banishment, and it might suffice to have driven him out of the country; but those are bloodthirsty that hate the upright, Pro_29:10.
It was the life, that precious life, that he hunted after, and nothing else would satisfy him. So implacable is his revenge that he sends a party of soldiers into Egypt, some hundreds of miles, and they bring him back by force of arms. It would not sufficiently gratify him to have him slain in Egypt, but he must feed his eyes with the bloody spectacle. They brought him to Jehoiakim, and he slew him with the sword, for aught I know with his own hands.
Yet neither did this satisfy his insatiable malice, but he loads the dead body of the good man with infamy, would not allow it the decent respects usually and justly paid to the remains of men of distinction, but cast it into the graves of the common people, as if he had not been a prophet of the Lord; thus was the shield of Saul vilely cast away, as though he had not been anointed with oil. Thus Jehoiakim hoped both to ruin his reputation with the people, that no heed might be given to his predictions, and to deter others from prophesying in like manner; but in vain; Jeremiah says the same.
There is no contending with the word of God. Herod thought he had gained his point when he had cut off John Baptist's head, but found himself deceived when, soon after, he heard of Jesus Christ, and said, in a fright, This is John the Baptist.
Here is Jeremiah's deliverance. Though Urijah was lately put to death, and persecutors, when they have tasted the blood of saints, are apt to thirst after more (as Herod, Act_12:2, Act_12:3), yet God wonderfully preserved Jeremiah, though he did not flee, as Urijah did, but stood his ground.
Ordinary ministers may use ordinary means, provided they be lawful ones, for their own preservation; but those that had an extraordinary protection. God raised up a friend for Jeremiah, whose hand was with him; he took him by the hand in a friendly way, encouraged him, assisted him, appeared for him. It was Ahikam the son of Shaphan, one that was a minister of state in Josiah's time; we read of him, 2Ki_22:12. Some think Gedaliah was the son of this Ahikam.
He had a great interest, it should seem, among the princes, and he used it in favor of Jeremiah, to prevent the further designs of the priests and prophets against him, who would have had him turned over into the hand of the people, not those people (Jer_26:16) that had adjudged him innocent, but the rude and insolent mob, whom they could persuade by their cursed insinuations not only to cry, Crucify him, crucify him, but to stone him to death in a popular tumult; for perhaps Jehoiakim had been so reproached by his own conscience for slaying Urijah that they despaired of making him the tool of their malice.
Note, God can, when he pleases, raise up great men to patronize good men; and it is an encouragement to us to trust him in the way of duty that he has all men's hearts in his hands.
Two Prophets, same message, but a different outcome and we can learn a lot from this historic account of the two.
1. Jer. Had more faith, and more trust in the lord to keep him, and he did not flee his post.
Jer 26:14 As for me, behold, I am in your hand: do with me as seemeth good and meet unto you.
Jer 26:15 But know ye for certain, that if ye put me to death, ye shall surely bring innocent blood upon yourselves, and upon this city, and upon the inhabitants thereof: for of a truth the LORD hath sent me unto you to speak all these words in your ears.
Jer said, ‘do what you want to me I do not care I have spoken what I was told to and I did not diminish, hold back anything’.
Jer. knew no matter what he was not truly in these peoples hands, but the lords hands, he spoke, go ahead kill me and innocent blood will be on you, this would have doubled their sin.
Jer stood steady, unmovable and kept declaring the word, he faced the cistern and almost died, he was caste in prison, but kept speaking. He used letters of his prophecy and had Baruch speak them; this is the same as Paul, Paul wrote four epistles form his jail. Man can cast you into a prison, but he cannot cast the word of the lord in prison.
2. Urijah. This prophet did not diminish the word, he spoke the truth, but once he heard of the people wanting to kill him and Jer. he fled to Egypt, for safety, we read , he was hunted down and killed, the people tried to kill the prophetic word, they put him in a common grave and not a Prophets grave to try and say he was not a prophet. This lust for bloodshed was now upon them, and they wanted more.
Nero did the same thing, after Deacon Stephen, the first Christian martyr, Nero saw it pleased the people and so he started to persecute the rest of the Christians. Next was the death of James, John’s brother, than they put Peter in Jail, but Peter was delivered.
What is the key lesson between these two prophets? Faith
It takes faith, trust, hope, and reliance on the lord to see you are kept, it may be your call is to be martyred, no one should think this, every person should minister on and think only of the call, the truth, winning souls, and never diminishing the word.
Some like Urijah will take the running and fleeing route when they hear, a word, a rumor that evil men are coming after them.
Some will even fall away and take the mark of the beast out of fear. Fear is a very bad thing; it causes poor judgment, bad plans, over reactions, a lack of wisdom, kills faith and puts one in panic mode.
So whom will you be like? Urijah, or Jeremiah, the choice is yours, what will you do, dear reader what will you chose, it is up to you and remember, the lord can be trusted and He is faithful, you will not die one second before your time.
