Jer 15:17 I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of thy hand: for thou hast filled me with indignation.
My “rejoicing” (Jer_15:16) was not that of the profane mockers (Psa_1:1; Psa_26:4, Psa_26:5) at feasts. So far from having fellowship with these, he was expelled from society, and made to sit “alone,” because of his faithful prophecies.
because of thy hand — that is, Thine inspiration (Isa_8:11; Eze_1:3; Eze_3:14).
filled me with indignation — So Jer_6:11, “full of the fury of the Lord”; so full was he of the subject (God’s “indignation” against the ungodly) with which God had inspired him, as not to be able to contain himself from expressing it. The same comparison by contrast between the effect of inspiration, and that of wine, both taking a man out of himself, occurs (Act_2:13, Act_2:15, Act_2:18).
I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced,.... With them, the mockers; or, "those that make merry" (r); as the word is rendered in Jer_30:19, and so the Targum,
"those that sing;''
and dance and live jovially; with these the prophet did not associate himself; such levity being unsuitable to his character as a prophet, and to those grievous messages he was charged with; and though he had joy, it was of another kind; it was not carnal, but spiritual; not outward, but inward; and what arose from the word of the Lord, being found and eaten by him. Moreover, there were some things which he was obliged by his office to deliver, that were very distressing to him, and made him very melancholy; so that he shunned all company and diversion, which might have been lawfully enjoyed: for this is not to be understood of the assembly or council of the wicked governors of the nation, and much less of the refuse of the people, that mocked at the word of God, and scoffed at the prophets and people of God; but of Jeremiah's friends and acquaintance, that met and made merry together; with whom he could not join, because of the sorrowful case in which he was, on account of the people he was sent unto:
I sat alone, because of thine hand; not because he was obliged to it, being deserted by men, but of choice; he withdrew from company, kept himself retired at home in his own house, there meditating upon the word of God, and mourning over the case of his people; and this he did, because the afflicting hand of God was upon him, or because the hand and spirit of prophecy was upon him, and he was charged to denounce very grievous things against the people; and because the hand of divine power and authority was over him, to which he ought to be subject, and was ready to obey:
for thou hast filled me with indignation; either with the indignation of the people against him, because of his prophecies; or with indignation against them, because of their sins; or with denunciations of wrath he was to deliver to them; and so the Targum,
"for thou hast filled me with a prophecy of cursing.''
The call, the truth, obeying to speak the truth, counting the cost, it comes with a heavy burden, O' How I know. Jer. Could not even got to family gatherings, he simply could not do it. He sat alone. He walked alone, he carried this burden alone. He came to a place of hating to have to speak these words of harsh rebuke, all it gave him was trouble, persecution, scorned. When you decide to cross the line in the sand, and make your stand for Christ you will face the same thing.
The remnant bride is suffering, most know this, because they are, many are suffering lonesomeness, and feeling the despair of it. Many are laughed at, not listened to. Listen this chapter if you read it all, you will find Jer, was human, as we are all, he cursed the day he was born, he said God was a liar, many of us have had such words in prayer out of deep anguish, it is what we come to, but we do not stay there.
Jer 15:18 Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuseth to be healed? wilt thou be altogether unto me as a liar, and as waters that fail?
The prophet hit the end of his rope, the lord did not come in grace, he said just the opposite a hard word.
Jer 15:19 Therefore thus saith the LORD, If thou return, then will I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me: and if thou take forth the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: let them return unto thee; but return not thou unto them.
The lord said, If you return, from your pity party, and separate the holy from the profane, than you will be my mouth again, it took a decision, it was a strong rebuke. The lord said do not return to them, let them come to you, this is the case in my life, such persecution locally as the dooms day prophet, the lord said, go, get out of Zohar, leave, I will put you farther out in the wilderness to location 3, far away, and they will come to you, in time, you are no longer to go to them. This does not mean to stop street preaching, winning souls on the streets, just not in Yermo, these ones the lord said, you have spoken faithful all these years , so wait until somethings happen, than let them come to you. John the Baptist lived outside, camped out at the Jordan river, and the people came out to him.
The lord in the next verse gave the prophet some solid words of encouragement to sustain him.
Jer 15:20 And I will make thee unto this people a fenced brasen wall: and they shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith the LORD.
Jer 15:21 And I will deliver thee out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem thee out of the hand of the terrible.
What a promise for the ones who chose to sound the holy alarm, and will not faint, or stop, but declare the whole counsel of the lord, you will lose friends, family and you will sit alone, feel alone, it is all part of the way it is. Verse 20, I have read many times and have found great comfort in it esp. of late, I stand on it, believe it, quote it. It has sustained me. A true move and work of the lord, will have the ones who will come against it, but a true work of the lord, it may cost you, but no man will be able to stop it, no matter how hard they try, they will be fighting the lord himself, this is very dangerous to do. Touch not my anointed and do my prophets no harm. Those that do, one day will pay a great price. many that will soon lose all they have, will lose it, many others will repent and return to their first love. The reason for Judgment is to bring people back to their senses and understand all they held dear, once gone, means nothing. The lord judges for a reason, to see his people return, and return they will. I have seen the mission we are at, full of people, much going on, I have clearly seen this before we ever got the place given, and from day one when my feet hit the grounds I saw it, and it will be so, because the lord said it, and has shown it.
Ezek, was told, " I will make your forehead like flint, because I am sending you to a rebellious house, a rebellious people, we must go toe to toe, and not back down, but have a tender heart and not a heart of flint, but a forehead, not letting the rebellion and persecution get to us, we must have tough skin , but soft hearts. When we do at times say, " Lord enough, I can take no more, just take me, " Prophets and Kings have said this. the saying is true, " Heavy hangs the head that wares the crown" I speak of humble leadership, not a crowned person, that comes in glory and than we cast them at the lords feet.
So, we have learned a few things in this part.
1. The prophet could not play in any rain-deer games, he could not go to family gatherings, he sat alone.
2. He had had enough and cried out with a broken heart.
3. The lord gave him a strong truth and said IF you return, its up to you Prophet
4. He was promised even when he is fought against, resisted the lord would not allow him to be stopped, he would be protected and he would not go into captivity as the others,, he would have favor with his captors, earlier this was said in the chapter, read it.
So, it is a lonely road, I can testify, I have broken, but every time, the lord corrects me, teaches me, comforts me, and assures me, this is the lord speaking, and it will not fall to the ground. Be encouraged if you are such a one as we have just read, it is the way of the cross, it is painful, it is lonely, all will forsake you, If you choose to follow in the masters steps.
