Mat 9:13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
I will start with those in the professed Found Department.
But go ye and learn (poreuthentes de mathete). With biting sarcasm Jesus bids these preachers to learn the meaning of Hos_6:6. It is repeated in Mat_12:7. Ingressive aorist imperative (mathete).
Hos 6:6 For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
Barnes on the Text in Matt ch 9:13
But go ye and learn ... - To reprove them, and to vindicate his own conduct, he appealed to a passage of Scripture with which they ought to have been acquainted: “I will have mercy, and not sacrifice,” Hos_6:6. This is not a declaration on the part of God that he was opposed to “sacrifices” or “offerings for sin;” for he had appointed and commanded many, and had therefore expressed his approbation of them. It is a Hebrew mode of speaking, and means, “I prefer mercy to sacrifice;” or, “I am more pleased with acts of benevolence and kindness than with a mere external compliance with the duties of religion.” Mercy here means benevolence or kindness toward others. “Sacrifices” were offerings made to God on account of sin, or as an expression of thanksgiving. They were commonly bloody offerings, or animals slain; signifying that the sinner offering them deserved to die himself, and pointing to the great sacrifice or offering which Christ was to make for the sins of the world. “Sacrifices” were the principal part of the worship of the Jews, and hence came to signify “external worship in general.” This is the meaning of the word here. The sense in which our Saviour applies it is this: “You Pharisees are exceedingly tenacious of the “external” duties of religion; but God has declared that he prefers benevolence or mercy to those external duties. It is proper, therefore, that I should associate with sinners for the purpose of doing them good.”
I came not to call the righteous ... - No human beings are by nature righteous, Psa_14:3; Rom_1:18-32; Rom_3:10-18. The Pharisees, however, “pretended” to be righteous. Christ might have meant by this answer that it was not the design of his coming to cal such persons to repentance, knowing that they would spurn his efforts, and that to a great extent they would be vain; or, more probably, he meant to affirm that his proper and only business was to call to repentance such people as he was now with. He came to seek and save such, and it was his “proper business,” therefore, to associate with them.
Go ye and learn - Ye that take upon you to teach others. I will have mercy and not sacrifice - That is, I will have mercy rather than sacrifice. I love acts of mercy better than sacrifice itself. Hos_6:6.
Let us look at this well know O.T. lesson Hosea 6:5-6
Hos 6:5 Therefore have I hewed them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth: and thy judgments are as the light that goeth forth.
Hos 6:6 For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
1. Mercy -Hebrew:
From H2616; kindness; by implication (towards God) piety; rarely (by opprobrium) reproof, or (subjectively) beauty: - favour, good deed (-liness, -ness), kindly, (loving-) kindness, merciful (kindness), mercy, pity, reproach, wicked thing.
Mercy-Webster first ed.;
MER'CY, n. [L. misericordia.]
1. That benevolence, mildness or tenderness of heart which disposes a person to overlook injuries, or to treat an offender better than he deserves; the disposition that tempers justice, and induces an injured person to forgive trespasses and injuries, and to forbear punishment, or inflict less than law or justice will warrant. In this sense, there is perhaps no word in our language precisely synonymous with mercy. That which comes nearest to it is grace. It implies benevolence, tenderness, mildness, pity or compassion, and clemency, but exercised only towards offenders. Mercy is a distinguishing attribute of the Supreme Being.
The Lord is long-suffering and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty. Num 14.
2. An act or exercise of mercy or favor. It is a mercy that they escaped.
3. Pity; compassion manifested towards a person in distress.
4. Clemency and bounty.
5. Charity, or the duties of charity and benevolence.
6. Grace; favor. 1 Cor 7. Jude 2.
7. Eternal life, the fruit of mercy. 2 Tim 1.
9. The act of sparing, or the forbearance of a violent act expected. The prisoner cried for mercy.
To be or to lie at the mercy of, to have no means of self-defense, but to be dependent for safety on the mercy or compassion of another, or in the power of that which is irresistible; as, to be at the mercy of a foe, or of the waves.
Compassion for the miserable. Its object is misery. By the atoning sacrifice of Christ a way is open for the exercise of mercy towards the sons of men, in harmony with the demands of truth and righteousness (Gen_19:19; Exo_20:6; Exo_34:6, Exo_34:7; Psa_85:10; Psa_86:15, Psa_86:16). In Christ mercy and truth meet together. Mercy is also a Christian grace (Mat_5:7; Mat_18:33-35).
Thank the lord for the lost and found departments in life, or a lot of us would have no reading glasses, a drivers lic, a little Kid. LOL.
The found in our text are any thing but, they are lost , very lost, but think they are found, the Scholar, Priests, lawyers, Pharisees, the Christian. The legalistic think, " Thank the lord I am not like that person". Jesus covered that in a parable about a Pharisee and the tax collector, The Pharisee said, 'I thank you God, I am not like all the other sinners', the tax collector in the lost department, he said, 'I am not worthy, I am a sinner', the lost was found and found lost.
In the N.T. sacrifice, works, take on may forms, the lord says no, I care not about all this, you have no mercy, kindness, compassion, our lord is all about compassion, not so much religions formalism, legalism.
The N.T. speaks of, we are to be living sacrifices. This and this alone. Our worship, prayer, and service in a humble spirit, full of compassion on the ones that are really in the lost department.
Hosea Vrs 5, the prophets cut them down with the word of Jehovah, repent, the message has never changed for those in the lost and Found department.
I could go on and on about Churchanity, but the lord is pressing my spirit to speak, plea to the broken ones, backslidders, the ones that know they are in sin, or have need to be free and are lost, the un-saved. This one is for you.
This will not be a legalistic," Turn or burn " message, one of a serious call to action, but in Compassion, mercy, kindness, love. I hope some reading this part accept Jesus today, and are not distracted by the ones in the so called found department that have been a big stumbling block to them.
" For God so loved the world he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever shall believe in him shall not parish, but have eternal life"
LOVE. God loves you, he gave his only son to die in your place, just let him take your place.
I speak, minister write, prophecy much on coming Judgment, think not for one second, I enjoy it, like it, or even want to do it, but I must. The holy spirit will not let up on me . It is the NOW word,. I am not pointing fingers at the world, you the reader and speaking as an Angry watchmen, but a no one, a broken, humble voice, crying out in anguish concerning this I do not want to say.
I am a sinner save d by grace, I know it. The things I want to do, I do not and the things I do not want to do I do, its the same with all of us that are real Christians in the found department. Reaching out to others, it is what we are called to do, but in mercy, compassion, love and considering ourselves lest we also are tempted.
How easy it is to turn people off from the only truth, the only answer in life by our words, actions, lives and hypocrisy.
Remember O' Man where you have fallen from, this must always been on our minds in our dealings with those in the lost department.
I have noticed something, something I do not recall I have ever seen in my 40 years as an Evangelist.
1. Ones who hate the lord, I mean a vile hate.
2. Those that are so burdened with sin and want to be free, but no one has given them the answer, the real water of life.
3. A look of great fear, hopelessness, a look in the eyes that say , 'please help me, how must I be saved'.
4. The fields have never been more ripe for harvest, this always comes during a great awakening, and right before a great event is coming, and people know it, feel it, but do not know what to do.
I have heard two basic things said.
1. I tried the Church, it was a click, full of hypocrites, un -friendly, no one even said hello. I want nothing to do with this cold hearted click.
2. I said a pryer years ago, I am all set, and they are angry at you bring up Jesus? that is an Oxy moron. Your saved, you said a prayer, you say your a Christian and you have a hate when it is openly talked about? They are in the lots department.
I see it in peoples eyes when in Barstow, I see a look I have never seen before, this look is God at work, this will always come esp. before Judgments fall. I see a look in the eyes of 100% pure evil in others, they pass by you, stare at you, and look as if they want to kill you for no reason. The fruit is ripe, so ripe its falling off the vine, these ones are so open , you do not have to get into a long talk, a few words of love, compassion, and they break down and cry, something divine is happening, it is the love of God, reaching out to them. We may have the chance to see it, and simply be that one voice, in that divine encounter, to tell them a few things about our lord. Yes 40 years at this, I have never seen the fields so ripe for harvest.
Reader, if you have been turned off by the Church, I understand, the lord is turned off by it as well. If you feel it is nothing but a click, your correct, we have shammed our lord , in our attitude, actions and words, forgive us lord.
The Gospel is Good new, not bad news. It brings deliverance, it takes the weight of guilt and past you carry off of your back and sets you free, and who the son of God has set free, is free indeed. Jesus came that you may have life, and that you may have abundant life, more than enough, not always a money issue, grace, glory, is far better than a new gadget . The lord , our Father looks for the lost sheep, the lost coin, the prodigal sons and daughters. Understand he is the only way to freedom. I ask you in love...." have you had enough yet, are you sick and tiered of carrying all the weight?' If so, this word is for you. Turn to the lord, repent and you will be set free.
It is not easy, no bible teaching in the N.T. says you will have no problems, no needs, no hurt.
It does say someones else will take that load, someone else will carry you when you can not take one more step. This is the good news, eternal life in glory, joy, no tears, fears, all love and joy, it simply waits for you to make the simple move, repent and accept Jesus as your lord, turn everything over to him, and you will live in freedom and great joy, even if your in need of things, he will become your all in all.
Do not let those in the found department tell you, you must look and think as they do, live like they do, take out your ear rings, tattoos must be taken off, clean up your act, or do not come to us.
Jesus comes to those that are need of a physician, if you can accept you need help, he is one word, one prayer away. I ask you beloved, ask Jesus to be your lord, and your Savior today, and your new life will start, you will be the coin that is found, that 1 in 99 sheep that have been found, that prodigal son, or daughter that will see the Father running to meet you half way, just take the first step today.
If you need someone to talk to, call ,email, we are on- line to serve and it is that simple.
