Num 20:10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?
Num 20:11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.
Num 20:12 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
Num 20:13 This is the water of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and he was sanctified in them.
The command Num_20:8 was “Speak ye unto the rock.” The act of smiting, and especially with two strokes, indicates violent irritation on the part of Moses; as does also his unseemly mode of addressing the people: “Hear now, ye rebels.”
The form too of the question, “must we, etc.,” directs the people not, as ought to have been the case, to God as their deliverer, but to Moses and Aaron personally.
In fact the faithful servant of God, worn out by the reiterated perversities of the people, breaks down; and in the actual discharge of his duty as God’s representative before Israel, acts unworthily of the great function entrusted to him.
Thus, Moses did not “sanctify God in the eyes of the children of Israel.” Aaron might have checked the intemperate words and acts of Moses, and did not. Hence, God punishes both by withdrawing them from their work for Him, and handing over its accomplishment to another.
The water of Meribah - i. e. “Strife.” The place is called “Meribah in Kadesh” Num_27:14, and “Meribah-Kadesh” Deu_32:51. to distinguish it from the “Meribah” of Exo_17:2 ff.
And he was sanctified in them - An allusion doubtless to the name “Kadesh” (holy), which though not now bestowed, acquired a new significance from the fact that God here vindicated His own sanctity, punishing Moses and Aaron who had trespassed against it.
Reader , there is a powerful message in this to us today.
Moses and Aaron were told speak to the rock, it would sanctify God in the eyes of the people, Moses did not speak to the rock, the command, he yells at the people, Moses struck the rock two times. The lord stepped in and sanctified himself, due to their unbelief, they did not enter the promised land, in this chapter Aaron was killed, later Moses looked at the land as was taken. Another took his place Joshua and Caleb, Joshua for Moses, Caleb for Aaron.
If you speak to the rock, you will not yell at the people.
You will not say, or think as King David did, " I said in my haiste, all men are liars".
This psalm statement means, David was hurting, suffering, those closest to him forsook him, he found no help from his inner circle, so he said all the world , all are liars, every single person, to hell with them all. That is what this means lit.
This is tempting our lord, we can not write off every person due to a few close ones that were not there. Paul in jail, at his first defense no man stood with him, Jesus, all his sheep were scattered at the crucifixion, Peter denied him. It is the same today.
When people , or your self, let you down, and it settles in your mind, your heart becomes hard, and sin will come, in one form or another, it will raise its ugly head.
It hurts when we are at our Meribah's, strive, but our Meribah Kadish is something else.
Kadish is the very holiness of the lord, not strife.
Holy, Holy, Holy, is the lord God all mighty.
This is Kadish-Meribah.
The world, filled with strife, trouble, hardship, rebels with out a cause, and an empty cistern that holds no water. The cistern had water, over flowing, but one day at a time, each act of neglect, it became dry, and later cracked, and in need of repair, restoration to hold any water.
The broken cistern , dry spells, we all face, but we must repent. We are in the world ,(Meribah) but not of it, we are in strife Meribah, but Kadish is there, we are the temple of the Kadish, the holy spirit, and so as Peter says," we have been given all things, all, not some , that pertain to life and Godliness". The tool's, the bible, prayer, holy, humble, service to our lord, as living sacrifices, and service to our fellow man.
The house today is rebellious, the very same the prophet Ezekiel was sent to. They yell Hosanna one day, and the next day, or week, or month, the very same people yell crucify, man has not changed, the world has not changed, but we as Christians must change.
The command was simple enough, short, to the point, easy to understand, to obey, " Speak to the rock", three words, no lexicon needed, no interpretation, just simple obedience, and yet, it was forsaken, and so were the ministers.
Today, in order to keep our Christ like composer and not take our frustration out on others, even the rebellious house of God, we speak to our rock Jesus, we speak to our rock in prayer, in the holy of holies, and mark Holy, Kadish.
The problem is, often we do not pray and so we lose it, yell, and say as David did, in his haste, "All men are liars".
Listen, Ezekiel was given as we are a forehead of flint, to be able to butt heads and not be over come by the rebellious house, this crazy nation, crazy days, and state of the Church. The Holy Spirit provides us with the same thing, it is called the full armor of God, in this case of the forehead of flint in the N.T. it is the helmet of salvation, a helmet covers the forehead, gives power, we can endure as we live the daily battle.
Obedience is the key, it is sometimes so simple , we miss it, other times our flesh says no, but God says yes, and we reap what we sow.
The full waters, should flow out of our bellies, the Holy spirit, or a dry, broken cistern that can hold no water, but it can be repaired, restored.
It only takes an act of obedience, it only takes a true prayer of repentance, the restoration will start. “Create in me a clean heart oh God, and renew a right spirit within me". "Return to unto me the joy of my salvation, " For against thee, and thee alone have I sinned".
The one we sinned against, we can come to , and ask help. We can get back up, and try again, we can once again engage in holy battle with our Kadish. It can begin today.
