2 Corinthians 13:5
Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith - Ἑαυτους πειραζετε· Try yourselves; pierce your hearts; bore yourselves throughout; try yourselves by what I have written, and see whether ye retain the true faith of the Gospel.
Prove your own selves - Ἑαυτους δοκιμαζετε· Put yourselves to the test, as you would try gold or silver suspected of adulteration. No more take that for Gospel which is not so, than you would take adulterated money for sterling coin. This is a metaphor taken from testing or assaying adulterated metals.
Know ye not your own selves - Are ye not full of wisdom and understanding? And is it not as easy to find out a spurious faith as it is to detect a base coin? There is an assay and touchstone for both. If base metal be mixed with the pure you can readily detect it; and as easily may you know that you are in the faith as you can know that base metal is mixed with the pure.
Does Jesus Christ dwell in you? You have his Spirit, his power, his mind, if ye be Christians; and the Spirit of Christ bears witness with your spirit that ye are the children of God. And this is the case except ye be reprobates; αδοκιμοι, base counterfeit coin; mongrel Christians. This metaphor holds excellently here. They had a Judaizing Christian among them; such, presumptively, was the false apostle: they had received his Judaico-Christian doctrine, and were what the prophet said of some of the Israelites in his time.
Reprobate silver, adulterated coin, shall men call them, Jer_6:30. And thus, when they were brought to the test, they were found reprobate; that is, adulterated with this mixture of bad doctrine. There is no other kind of reprobation mentioned here than that which refers to the trial and rejection of adulterated coin; and, by way of metaphor, to the detection of false Christianity. This reprobation came of the people themselves: they, not God, adulterated the pure metal. Man pollutes himself; then God reprobates the polluted.

REPROBATE, a. [L. reprobatus, reprobo, to disallow; re and probo, to prove.]
1. Not enduring proof or trial; not of standard purity or fineness; disallowed; rejected.
Reprobate silver shall men call them, because the Lord hath rejected them. Jer 6.
2. Abandoned in sin; lost to virtue or grace.
They profess that they know God, but in works deny him, being abominable and disobedient, and to every good work reprobate. Titus 1.
3. Abandoned to error, or in apostasy. 2 Tim 3.
We are to examine ourselves when we take holy communion, but not only than, daily sometimes. I do not mean to dwell on weakness and failures we all make, but to see if what you have been exposing yourself to is indeed found and supported by the true sound doctrine of the bible.
We are to die daily, to self, so we can live daily, we do not stay dead, we are fully alive in Jesus. The sifting of the saints is happening, later at the end of the tribulation the wheat and tares are separated, the goats from the sheep, but now the lord tests us, as we should by self examination test yourself. To the holy remnant that are in sound doctrine, all, we must all examine our hearts and test yourself. Deception would not be very effectual if it was not very slow in coming, one compromise at a time.
A wall, our spiritual walls, do not fall in one step, but brick by brick, one step at a time, one decision at a time. Many have made peace with pet pea sins, excuses for habits, and compromise, until we no longer are convicted by what once used to convict us.
May we never give in to the flesh and make a treaty with it, the spirit man can not coexist with the spirit man, one must die, what one is dying a slow death in you reader, that is why we examine, test our self's to see if we are indeed still in the true faith, sound doctrine. This is the reason, and this separates the reprobates from the holy bride of Christ.

What is your idea of power? What is your mentality concerning power?
Are you clamoring for power, wanting power? Well, it all works out
this way. True power from God's standpoint is Calvary power. Christ
crucified is the power of God. What is Calvary power? Well, it is
emptiness of self, you and I being emptied of self - and truly, that
is easier said than endured! Oh, how very much there is of this self
about us still! How we hate - how we suffer - being emptied of
What a terrible thing it is to feel our inability - to know
that we do not count in ourselves. Oh, to be /ABLE! /And yet have we
not proved, again and again, that our times of greatest emptiness and
weakness have been the times when God has done most, and got glory by
what He has done? Yes, it has been true. We have learnt it along
various lines and different ways, but God has been working right into
the very inside of us, so that the thing is done - it becomes a part
He does not have to maintain it by external conditions. But He
frequently uses such - very often physical - conditions, to bring us
to that place of utter dependence upon Himself. It is really not good
enough, is it, to be forced to it, compelled to it? That is God's way
of education, but it would be very much better for us to be fit and
well and as dependent upon God as ever.
So it all resolves itself into the need, in the first place, for what
is meant by being born from above: an entirely new nature and
disposition, to begin with, and then a letting God do His work of
conforming us to the image of His Son. I am not saying that works and
words do not come in, but it is a heartbreaking business to be working
and speaking with no power, and no registration of heaven. The Lord
give us light as to what He means by this.
