Depression- Pastor, Dr. Charles Novak

When a person looks at the above picture, and reads it, they may be quick to think that this is some kind of funny picture, where the man cannot find conversation with his wife, who is looking on at him, as he sits in his chair. But that could not be further from the truth, that would be a terrible misconception of what is really being stated here. The look on the mans face tells a very different story, a story of sadness, a story of being at a loss, actually a story of depression. The wife, who is looking in the background, knows this story of her husband, she has read it, a thousands times over.

And every time she reads it, the words never change, the story is always the same. Seeing depression, and dealing with depression are two very different things. The man is at a total loss, and feels as if the only want is “a real conversation with another human being about something that actually matters.” Just this statement alone shows this man is depressed, this is so common, when a person is depressed they often become trapped so to speak in their day in, and day out lives. And who ever may be in this day in day out life is somehow not able to be considered to be able to help make the difference, in this particular case, the other person, who we assume the artist has made to be the mans wife, is not even considered to be “another human being” let alone one that he could possible have a real conversation with.

Consider it this way, if the man was trapped in one room with this women for a substantial amount of time, being depressed as he is, this women would just blend in to the wallpaper, rather than to be view as another human being, let alone someone would possibly help him with his depression. We have seen this displayed in so many other cases in life with people, just consider the person who comes home from work after having a terrible day, the absolute minute he enters the door, a portion of why the day has went wrong belongs to each individual in the house. Really they have had nothing to do with why the day or work for that matter was so terrible, but make no mistake, blame of dome sort will be transferred to them. But this is not what God has intended for is in our lives, nor is it the way He wants us to live, God wants us to keep our minds on good thoughts, as we see in (Philippians Chapter 4 Verse 8 English Standard Version) “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

We must try to remember that God is with us always, and will never leave us. We are not alone in this race in life, be it a good race of life, or the race that we battle with over, and over again. This we see in (Deuteronomy Chapter 31 Verse 8 English Standard Version) “It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” We are never left alone in life, regardless of what the time may bring, weather it is tragedy or happiness God is with us. And although we may never understand why or exactly how the things in our lives happen the way they do, but with reading this verse we are assured that God is with us ever step of the way.

In times of need we are to seek God, we are to cry out to Him, and with all belief that we have in our bodies we need to truly know that our Lord God will be there for us to hear our cry, and save us in our time of need, as we read in (Psalms Chapter 34 Verse 17 English Standard Version) “When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.” God wants us to come to him, to ask Him for His help, consider that if life were perfect, then what need for God would we have. We need to stay in a state of constant wanting, and needing God for all times, for all things, and for all reasons in our lives.

One of the very common things that most people that suffer from depression do, is nothing, They know that they are in need, but fail to ask for help, they do not go to God in vigilant fervent prayer asking for His help, and His Will. This we read in (John Chapter 15 Verse 24 English Standard Version) “Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” Jesus Himself literally says in this verses, “that your joy may be full”, God wants us to be full with joy, His joy, and all we need to do to have this joy of His, is to ask Him. This scripture alone should show love of the deepest kind that Jesus has for us.

We need to have trust in the Lord, many a people tend to waver when adverse situations enter our lives. The harder the situation is, the harder it is for us to trust, as many may have their eyes focused on the problem at hand. But we should not have such a dedication to focus in the problem, we must trust in God in every situation, yes we must be vigilant of the goings on in our lives, but we must remain focused on Jesus, our Savior, having the believing trust that He will make all things right in our lives. We see this in (Psalms Chapter 32 Verse 10 English Standard Version) “Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD.”

Yes we know of those who suffer with depression, and this as a daily struggle. We know of a man who's only want “is a real conversation with another human being about something that actually matters” But if we continue to sit in our chair, that same chair that has confined us along with our emotions of depression, then we will always not see that others that are there to help. We will never think on the good things of life, we will never recall in our memory that God will not leave us or forsake us. We will never cry out to God, we will never ask so that we may receive, we will never trust in the Lord our God. And all this means that we will never leave our depression.

God has given us all, every human being the opportunity to live our life, the life that He has given to us through His creation, to live the best of how God would Will us to do. All we must do is give ourselves to Him in every shape, every way and every form of our very beings. We must focus our hearts, our thoughts, our emotions, our actions, our voice and every part of our lives on God. We must have the Promised knowledge that no matter what we face or go through in live that God will never leave us or forsake us, for I am not alone. Let the words of promise written in (Psalms Chapter 23) stay with us as we know the Lord God is always and forever. “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”

May the Lord God Jehovah, His son Jesus, the Christ, and the Holy Spirit dwell within everyone of us, bringing to us the saving knowledge of Carvery, and the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus gave for us on the cross, and the saving grace of the promise that the names of His believers are written in the Lambs Book of Life. No matter what comes our way, no matter what hits us, no matter what may strike us down, let us have no fear, because eternity with God in Heaven is our promise. So let us stand up in Rejoice for the Saving Grace of the Lord our God, who In every way loves and saves all who He has created.......Amen.
