Reflections-Feed My Sheep Series

Pro 27:19  As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man.

Proverbs 27:19

This shows us that there is a way, 1. Of knowing ourselves. As the water is a looking-glass in which we may see our faces by reflection, so there are mirrors by which the heart of a man is discovered to a man, that is, to himself. Let a man examine his own conscience, his thoughts, affections, and intentions.

Let him behold his natural face in the glass of the divine law (Jam_1:23), and he may discern what kind of man he is and what is his true character, which it will be of great use to every man rightly to know.

 2. Of knowing one another by ourselves; for, as there is a similitude between the face of a man and the reflection of it in the water, so there is between one man's heart and another's for God has fashioned men's hearts alike; and in many cases we may judge of others by ourselves, which is one of the foundations on which that rule is built of doing to others as we would be done by, Exo_23:9 Nihil est unum uni tam simile, tam par, quam omnes inter nosmet ipsos sumus. Sui nemo ipse tam similis quam omnes sunt omnium - No one thing is so like another as man is to man. No person is so like himself as each person is to all besides. Cic. de Legib. lib. 1.

One corrupt heart is like another, and so is one sanctified heart, for the former bears the same image of the earthy, the latter the same image of the heavenly.

 Proverbs 27:19

As in water face answereth to face - All men’s hearts are pretty nearly alike; water is not more like to water, than one heart is to another. Or, as a man sees his face perfectly reflected by the water, when looking into it; so the wise and penetrating man sees generally what is in the heart of another by considering the general tenor of his words and actions.

Have you ever laid, or sat by some water and looked at your face, day dreaming, hoping, wishing?

As children and youth we all did, and some today who are older still do, but how often do we look to see the reflection that is looking back at us? Does it look like Jesus, or someone else.

Prayer and the word are our best source of pure clean water, it will show the hearts secrets, the ones no one else knows about, only you and the lord.

Heb 4:12  For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discern-er of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Is this why so few study the bible, because it is the mirror we do not chose to look at, like a pitcher of an old friend or an X spouse, or someone that did you wrong?

In the post above this one we looked at the need to sharpen our sword, the word of the lord, and more on the sword, it is the ,discern-er of the thoughts and intents of the heart, most do not want that part, and so the word just sits collecting dust, anything but the word, why?

The word is alive, it speaks and the words few want to hear, but to grow we must hear, we must read what it has to say, we must let it do it's job and that is to expose who we are, our growth, or need, conviction, comfort.

The bible should be the first thing we start with and the last,( with prayer) and the only reflection that should matter, think, next time you are sitting by some water your reflection may look more like Jesus.
